Network Engineer - SCADA SUMMARY
The SCADA & Networking Engineer position will be responsible for implementation, troubleshooting and correction of SCADA (HMIs software and Historian software) errors and ISP communication connection issues for renewable energy facilities such as solar and wind power plants (solar preferred).  This position serves as the resident expert for diagnosing and directing corrective actions to resolve (1) communications and control functions between devices on site such as between PLCs and inverters; and (2) data transmission offsite to MaxGen’s Remote Operating Center (ROC), transmission operators, and regulatory authorities such as ISOs.  Implicit with these expectations, the SCADA Engineer identifies when outside expertise is needed, prepares the work scope and manages the third party.

The following responsibilities are not limited to:
  1. Working with MaxGen Remote Operation Center (ROC) operators to troubleshoot site communications, HMI configuration (GE Cimplicity, Wonderware Intouch, Ovation, SEL RTACs) and Historian (Microsoft SQL, Proficy and OSI PI) polling problems.
  2. Working with MaxGen’s Technicians to resolve Site connectivity issues (by logging to Modems/ Routers/ L3 switches) and troubleshooting field device communication problems.
  3. Working with MaxGen’s Technicians to help troubleshoot onsite COMMs problems that might include using one of the following communication protocols (RS-485 Modbus RTU, Ethernet/IP, RS-232 Modbus over TCP and OPC).
  4. Working with MaxGen’s Technicians or third party sub-contractor to troubleshoot analog to digital converters (ADC) devices i.e. (ADAMs, MOXAs, etc.)
  5. Develop and conduct training for MaxGen field and ROC technicians.
  6. Set up and troubleshoot network telemetry equipment including switches/routers/firewalls and computer NIC cards
  • BS degree in Electrical, Control Systems or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience in troubleshooting SCADA and Networking Problems.
Network Engineer - SCADA Skills and Knowledge
  • Good knowledge with SCADA Systems and Industrial Communication Protocols.
  • Working knowledge of NERC CIP and other security standards.
  • Working knowledge of Firewall and Network Security.
  • Knowledge of industry standard SCADA software and platforms.
  • Highly organized individuals capable of working on multiple SCADA/site communications simultaneously.
  • Strong technical writing skills for the development of design standards and specifications
  • Ability to collaborate and work as a team.
  • Knowledge of data communications protocols, networking equipment and computer operating systems such as Windows and Unix, including Cisco or Microsoft certified qualifications.
  • Knowledge with Shell scripting in Linux OS, Campbell Scientific Data loggers and measurement devices (CR1000 and 800), AquaSuite Data Acquisition Server (A8810) and SEL-35xx RTAC (Real Time Automation Controller)
  • Knowledge with Substation Automation, Protection Relays and Plant Controllers.
  • Working knowledge of inverter systems and inverter controls.
  • Working experience with utility grid operation, load flow studies, transmission planning and knowledge of feasibility, system impact and facility studies a plus.
  • Working knowledge of applicable North American and European electrical codes (i.e. NESC, NEC, IEC).
  • Working knowledge of NERC, FERC, WECC standards and orders as they apply to renewable generation design and compliance.
  • Familiarity with programming languages, UI design, databases.
  • 20 to 25% travel possible.
  • Office and field environment (walking is required, lifting is not required).

  • Frequent oral and written communications.
  • The position may be at a MaxGen office or a remote location.
