SUMMARY

The SCADA Engineer position will be responsible for implementation, troubleshooting and correction of SCADA, LAN, and other offsite communication service provider connection issues for renewable energy facilities such as solar and wind power plants (solar preferred).  This position serves as the resident expert for diagnosing and directing corrective actions to resolve (1) communications and control functions between devices on site such as between PLCs and inverters; and (2) data transmission offsite to MaxGen’s Remote Operating Center (ROC), transmission operators, and regulatory authorities such as ISOs.  Implicit with these expectations, the SCADA Engineer identifies when outside expertise is needed, prepares the work scope and manages the third party. 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The following responsibilities are not limited to:
  • Develop and conduct training for MaxGen field and ROC technicians.  The training will include:
    • How LAN and offsite ISP networks function (Modbus and DNP3 communication protocols, DHCP and static IP address management, MAC addresses, gateways, routers, data concentrators, historians, etc.).
    • The basics how SCADA programs control active power and reactive power, load following, and curtailments.
    • How to identify causes and corrective actions for communication interruptions.
    • How to troubleshoot data logger issues and properly configure data loggers when replacing sensors connected to the data logger.
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and correct or direct corrective actions to restore SCADA functions and/or data communication transmission/reception issues using field technicians or third party support as applicable. 
  • Identify third party SCADA/LAN experts and have them qualified as approved suppliers.
  • Prepare work scopes for owner approval when third party help is needed to restore or improve SCADA/LAN/data transmission and reception operations.
  • Manage third party work approved by owners for SCADA/LAN/data transmission and reception restoration or improvement.
  • Develop and manage a program for maintaining IT security for renewable sites monitored by the MaxGen ROC to include maintaining software up-to-date with OEM security patches.
 
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
  • BS degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering required (MS, Ph.D or P.E. preferred with an emphasis on Control and/or Communication Systems).
  • SCADA Systems Design Engineering with 5+ years experience.

Skills and Knowledge
  • In depth knowledge and project design experience with SCADA Systems, Substation Automation, Protection Relays, Communication Protocols, and Plant Controls.
  • In-depth knowledge of LAN systems and ISP systems common for the renewables power industry (solar preferred) to include PLCs, communication systems and protocols, networking architectures.
  • Use of computerized work management systems to manage and update daily work.
  • Working knowledge of inverter systems and inverter controls.
  • Working knowledge of NERC CIP and other security standards.
  • Working knowledge of Firewall and Network Security.
  • Knowledge of industry standard SCADA software and platforms.
  • Working experience with utility grid operation, load flow studies, transmission planning and knowledge of feasibility, system impact and facility studies a plus.
  • Working knowledge of applicable North American and European electrical codes (i.e. NESC, NEC, IEC).
  • Working knowledge of NERC, FERC, WECC standards and orders as they apply to renewable generation design and compliance.
  • Familiarity with programming languages, UI design, databases.
  • Highly organized individuals capable of working on multiple SCADA/site communications simultaneously.
  • Strong technical writing skills for the development of design standards and specifications
  • Ability to collaborate and work as a team.
 
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
  • 20 to 25% travel possible.
